When was your last health check?

We all know the old saying “Prevention is better than cure” but what does that really mean nowadays. Getting 30 minutes of physical activity a day, eating our fruit and veg, not smoking and connecting with people are all important ways to maintain our health. However, for both prevention and cure, visiting your GP once a year can make all the difference to your health. A regular health check is important at any age but some health checks are more important at different age groups.
20’s & 30’s Health Checklist
Ask your doctor about:
- Early stage heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke
- Examine your testicles regularly for lumps or bumps – feel anything unusual? Get it checked out immediately
- Blood cholesterol and glucose
- Anxiety, stress and depression are not signs of weakness – talk to your GP or pharmacist.
40’s & 50’s Health Checklist
Ask your doctor about:
- Heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke
- Respiratory illness and lung cancer
- Bowel and prostate cancer screening
- Hearing check
- Sexual health – conditions such as erectile dysfunction are common and treatable
60 + Health Checklist
Ask your doctor about:
- Heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke
- Cholesterol and glucose levels
- Eye check – especially for glaucoma and cataracts
- Bowel cancer screening
- Bone density
- Mental health – if you feel sad, anxious or isolated, your doctor or pharmacist is there to help
- Flu and Pneumonia shots – flu can carry serious complications as we age, and you need to protect yourself against it
Health Check’s for any age:
Ask your doctor about:
- Diabetes
- Skin cancer screening – if you see a mole or growth that looks suspicious, get it checked
- Weight issues
- Blood cholesterol and glucose
- Drug and alcohol issues
- Mental health and well-being
- Teeth – visit your dentist once a year (even if you wear dentures)
