Samaritans – It’s your call
Samaritans – It’s your call. No judgement No pressure. We’re here for you. Whoever you are, whatever you’re going through, we’re here to listen. Maybe your problems have built up over time. Perhaps you’ve hit an unexpected crisis. Or you just can’t pinpoint what is wrong. Don’t wait until it feels too much. You don’t have to face it alone.
The Dublin branch of Samaritans has been in operation for 49 years. It is completely volunteer led and run. We are a charity and it is the public’s kind donations which keep our lines open In our first year of listening (1970/71) we had over 1,000 contacts. Today there are over 330 Dublin Samaritans answering phone calls, texts and emails, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Last year Dublin Branch received over 113,000 calls, an overall increase of 6% on the previous year. People phone or visit and some prefer to text, write or email. We have 6 telephone lines and are available on these 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We also have quiet rooms in 112 Marlborough St, where people can come to talk. Our doors are open from 10 am to 10 pm every day.
Despite changes to our appearance and the technology we use, the service that is offered by Samaritans today is no different from before. Over the years, the organisation has received millions of calls from people in distress and hundreds of thousands of people have given their time to become volunteers. For as long as we are needed, we will be here. In Ireland last year there was 639,652 calls to Samaritans in total. Nearly 95% of these calls were by phone. There are 20 branches of Samaritans all over Ireland – all of whom can be reached on 116 123 – free to call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Text 087 260 9090. Or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Samaritans are currently looking for volunteers to join them. Anyone can be a volunteer and Samaritans will provide full training, support and mentoring.
